For Mac you will need the development and runtime libraries. These may be bundled together in the same .dmg
Windows and Linux will for now just need the dev libraries
Windows users Important
If you are using VS 6 or VS 2003 makes sure to get VS6 version of the SDL binaries. Other wise you will get an undefined main linking error.
If you are not using visual studios make sure the get SDL binaries that have the word mingw32 in the file name.
Which Links to download.
You need to try to get the binaries for each lib. The development lib download link has the word devel in the name of the download file.
The runtime and source code links will not have any libs in them.
SDL_gfx does not alway provide binaries for all Operating System especial Mac. You may have to build them from source. I have made a tutorial for how to compile SDL_gfx from source. If you have problems with SDL_gfx try using .331 it does not require SDL_gfx
Note:
There are many good tutorials out there on setting up your compiler to link with SDL libraries.
Lazy foo has some of the best.
If the setup tutorials I provide are confusing or don't work for you feel free to use a some one else to get your self set up with the SDL libraries.
